How to Calculate Industrial Camera Sensor Size in the shortest time?

Time : 2025-04-07

As one of the most critical parameters in industrial cameras, what exactly does "target size" mean? Let’s break it down!

The target size of an industrial camera refers to the physical dimensions of the camera's image sensor, specifically the effective photosensitive area responsible for capturing light and converting it into a digital image. This parameter is essential to consider during system design and component selection.

After learning the meaning, how can we calculate the size? Here's a simple formula.

Pixel Size × Resolution = Sensor Dimensions

For example, here is a 1.3MP camera, the pixel size is 4.8×4.8μm, and the resolution is 1280×1024.

Firstly, let’s calculate the width and length of the camera sensor.

Width : 4.8μm×1280=6.1444mm

Length : 4.8μm×1024=4.9152mm

Then, it’s to calculate the diagonal.

At last, convert to Inches. In camera chips, one inch is 16mm, not the standard 25.4mm. So this sensor size is 7.868÷16≈1/2 inch.

This calculation method applies universally to determine the sensor size of industrial cameras based on pixel dimensions and resolution. After checking the sensor size, it can ensure compatibility with lens and camera, optimizing image quality for your application.

Finally, a tip for you, always double check if your lens supports the sensor size.
